Be a leader, not a bossy
JULY 11, 2022 | LEADERS | BY ROCĂŤO DURAN
Leadership isn’t something you are born with but rather something you create. If you have ever been called or viewed as a leader, it is something you should be proud of. Anyone can be a leader, so why not try to be the most effective leader you can be? That is why in this blog we want to tell you about the 5 most effective things that can shape you to be a great leader for your team, business, and your personal growth.
Â
Are you a business owner? If your response is a yes, this also means you’re automatically a leader; you’re leading your business and your team. Leaders never stop learning and the best leaders continue to learn from others. Part of being a leader is opening up to new ideas every day. Even the best leaders must accept that they need to change themselves, then the people around them. Adjusting your leadership ways, to become the best leader you can be is a step that can open up great opportunities in your career and business!
1. Accept making mistakes.
One of the best ways to navigate your growth as a leader is to be okay with making mistakes but also learn how to avoid them. You can do this by reflecting on past errors or learning about other leaders’ errors and how they managed to deal with them. The number one thing a leader should automatically love doing is working with other people. A leader is always available and easy to reach out to by their team members. Do not abandon your people. Company goals are important but also make sure to focus on growing as a leader and always be willing to learn. Although change may seem terrifying, a great leader should always be prepared to change direction. Remember that leadership involves inspiring, encouraging, motivating, and bringing out the best in your team.
2. The foundations of a solid team
Trust and respect are the two basic foundational elements of a successful team; but, support, communication, and motivation are skills you can also put into play (GTI USA). Positive leaders and team members help improve performance and create a healthy team bond and work environment. Meeting regularly with your team opens up stronger lines of communication and ensures that members are more open with the group. Making sure everyone feels motivated and knows how they are contributing to the company, promotes a fun culture of growth and productivity. Positive phrases like - “thank you for your hard work”, “I appreciate you”, and “you’re awesome” remind your team how proud you are of them.
3. Characteristics of a leader
Leaders empower others and their teams to achieve the highest success possible. “When everyone on a team is empowered and trusted to manifest their full potential, each person becomes capable of so much more, which makes the company capable of so much more” (JUSTIN ROSENSTEIN, CO-FOUNDER OF ASANA). Great leaders communicate effectively with their team as a whole and individually. Strong leaders don’t direct but rather inspire, motivate, and guide others. Leaders are always prepared to problem-solve and provide the best solutions possible. Leaders are lifelong learners that thrive to be better.
4. Learn to grow
Leaders are never satisfied with what they already know about leadership and are always curious to learn more (INC.). Seek feedback from other leaders and your team. Learn to understand what you can and can’t control to not overwhelm or overwork yourself. Good leaders never complain about what they can't control, and never demand results from team members when things are outside their control. It is okay to allow yourself to be vulnerable sometimes. When you admit your weaknesses, your team will uplift you and help grow with you. A leader’s job is to support others but it is also your job to be willing to share and have others support you as well.
5. Celebrate your accomplishments
Celebrating your accomplishments honors the work that has been done and shows gratitude to the people who made it possible It is important to celebrate the small and big wins. Celebrating success helps motivate your next great achievement. Make sure to recognize and appreciate your team and all the effort that went into achieving that big win. However, you choose to celebrate, do it in a meaningful and impactful way!

Navigating your way to be the most effective leader you can be isn’t easy but with the dedication you put into it, it is possible. It’s okay to make mistakes, use them as a learning tool. Support, motivate, and communicate with your team to create strong bonds. Be ready to be a leader even on the days you might not feel your best. Most importantly, be ready to evolve as a leader and be proud of your accomplishments!
